I also remembered why I deliberately abandoned 1.0.5 and stayed with 1.0.4 because it just.worked. Even if I can save all my ship designs (which Squad can take when they pry them from my cold, dead hands). I might end up staying with 1.0.4 ultimately because, no matter how I try and justify it, I just.don't want to start from scratch. So, after a few hours of courting with disaster before ripping an installation of KSP from a complete hard drive backup I had sitting around handily, I know what I'll be doing: trying to upgrade from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5 without completely destroying my existing satellite communications network or my various space stations/probes that use universal storage (both of which radically altered their mods in 1.0.5 to the point of incompatibility). Aside from letting you fill up for the return to Kerbin, it's also great for aiding your exploration of the rest of the Kerbol system. Ike is pretty much ideal for a refueling base because it has less gravity than the Mun but has a large gravity well compared to Duna. It may also be to your benefit to set up a refueling station on Ike. Having done something like this before, I can confirm that it's a good idea (although the transfers become more complicated since you're launching from Munar orbit instead of LKO).
I should probably just assemble all the items I will want into a new station at the Mun, then send up a series of fuel tanks and boosters, then just send it all in one go to Duna. Once at the Mun station, I can re-fuel off the mined ore -> LF/OX conversion, and then do my transfer burns from the Mun rather than Kerbin. Idea is, I only have to get the items from Kerbin to the Mun station.
